Setting Miscellaneous Service Parameters
The following aspects of the service behavior may be managed for both the File System Service and MetaData Service: CPU usage, restoring connections to unavailable databases and folders, saving debugging information for troubleshooting purposes, and providing general access accounts. Note, that in most cases you will not need to make any changes to the default values provided for these service parameters.
The service parameters mentioned above are set individually for each of two InterSync services through the Properties dialog window associated with either of the service snap-ins.
To open the Properties window for a particular InterSync service, expand the MetaCommunications Services sub-tree in the tree portion of the Management Console, right click the <Server_Name>.<Service_Name> snap-in (where <Service_Name> is either “File System Service” or “MetaData Service”) and select Properties from the popup window; or select a particular service snap-in and click the Properties button on the tool bar.
Managing CPU Usage for the InterSync Services
CPU usage is managed by the Processor control group of parameters located on the General tab of the Properties window associated with a particular InterSync service. Use this category of parameters to define the list of CPU(s) available for the service usage and assign the priority with which the service will compete for CPU resources.
To select available CPU(s), click the corresponding entry(ies) in the CPU listing (use the Shift or Control key to select multiple CPUs). The access priority specified for the service will be used by all selected CPUs.
By default, both InterSync services are allowed to use all processors installed on your computer and are assigned the average service priority.
Restoring Connections to Unavailable Databases and Folders
The InterSync services communicate to DSM databases and file systems of multiple computers in process of updating digital resource records. For different reasons, an access failure may occur when the service is unable to connect to an attached database or a folder residing on a network location.
Recovering from an access failure is managed by the Access failure group of parameters located on the Recovery tab of the Properties window associated with a particular InterSync service. This category of parameters allow you to specify:
The interval between the service’s attempts to re-establish connections to unavailable databases and folders/files. By setting this interval you determine a period of time within which unaccessible databases/folders will stay excluded from processing (disabled) until the next scheduled attempt is done.
The maximum number of attempts and the interval between attempts to access folders/files before a file access failure is reported.
By default, both InterSync services are configured to try establish connections to unavailable resources every 180 seconds and given 3 attempts to access folders/files with the 1 second interval before another file access failure is confirmed.
Note: All currently unavailable databases will be listed with a red dot on the database icon ( ) and disabled folders will be displayed with a grayed out icon (
).
Saving Debugging Information for Troubleshooting Purposes
The InterSync services may be configured to provide debugging information that may assist you in troubleshooting service failures. For this purpose, use the Service failure group of parameters located on the Recovery tab of the Properties window associated with a particular InterSync service. This category of parameters allows you to specify whether a dump file should be written in case of service failure, the information to be included in the dump file, and whether the previous dump file can be overwritten. The dump file is written to the InterSync application log and may be uploaded to the MetaCommunications Technical Support department using the FTP Logs Uploader utility.
By default, both InterSync services are configured to create a complete process memory dump and overwrite existing dump files.
Providing Default Access Accounts
In order to be able to connect to a folder residing on a local or network computer, the FSS and/or MDS must be provided with an account that have proper file access permissions. By default, the FSS and MDS are configured to use their service logon account assigned by the Windows operating system (“LocalSystem”) to access folders.
However, both the FSS and MDS are unable to connect to remote computers using the “LocalSystem” account. In this case, you can either specify an individual account for every network folder or use the default access account instead. Using the default account option allows you to simplify the process of managing multiple folders that may be accessed under the same account without violating your company’s security policy.
For details on setting folder access accounts, refer to “Specifying the List of Synchronized Folders” in the “Managing the FSS Folder List for an Attached Database” section and the “Managing the MDS Folder List for an Attached Database” section.
The default access account is set under the Security tab of the Properties window associated with a particular InterSync service.
