Attaching Databases to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance Snap-in

Each database that you would like to monitor using the Database Monitoring and Maintenance Management Console snap-in should be “attached” to the snap-in using the Database Properties dialog window. Attaching a MetaCommunications database involves specifying the location of the computer running the Microsoft SQL Server, the name of the MetaCommunications database, and the user name and password that the Management Console should use when logging into the Microsoft SQL Server in order to access the database.

Attaching a MetaCommunications database to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance Snap-in

  1. Select Start:Program Files:MetaCommunications:Management Console from the Task Bar. This will open the MetaCommunications Management Console.
  2. Expand “MetaCommunications Services” in the tree portion of the console*, right-click on “Database Monitoring and Maintenance”, and select* Attach Database.... This will open a new Database Properties dialog window.

  1. Specify the location of the computer running the Microsoft SQL Server. In the “SQL Server location” field of the window type the name of the computer or select (local) if SQL Server is running on the same computer as the Management Console. The location may be entered as a computer name (e.g. “ComputerName”, “(local)”, or as an IP address. To attach a MSDE database, type the database server location as: “<ComputerName>\metacomm”. You may also click to browse for the computer.

Note: MSDE is installed on your computer as a named instance of the Microsoft SQL Server. You must refer to it as: “<ComputerName>\metacomm”. For more information on MSDE installation, refer to the MetaCommunications Installation Guide, chapter “Installing Server Components“.

  1. Type the name of the MetaCommunications database you would like to attach in the “Database name” field.
  2. Type the user name and password of the Microsoft SQL Server login, that the Management Console should use when logging into the database server, in the corresponding fields.
  3. OPTIONAL: Click “Test connection” to check if it is possible to establish connection to the database server.
  4. Click OK. This will attach the database to the Management Console and display the database host and name in the tree portion of the console.
  5. Repeat steps 1-6 for each database you would like to attach to the Management Console.

At this point, the MetaCommunications database(s) that you would like to monitor have been attached to the Database Monitoring and Maintenance Snap-in.
