Specifying Options for a Database

Specifying Options for a Database

For each database, the MetaData Service may be configured by specifying options in the Database Properties window. Options which may be specified using the Database Properties window include the number of simultaneous connections to the database, the database scan and scheme reload period, and various file processing options. For most users, the default settings are recommended. These default settings can be changed if there is a specific technical reason to do so. Use caution when modifying the default settings for database options, as improper configuration of the MetaData Service database options can negatively impact system performance.

Specifying options for a database attached to the MetaData Service

1. Open the Database Properties window for the database whose options you would like to modify. The Database Properties window may be opened by right-clicking the database name in the MetaCommunications Services:MetaData Service:Databases sub-tree of the MetaCommunications console and selecting Properties.

Note: If you are specifying options when attaching the database, the Database Properties dialog window will already be open.

2. Click the “Options” folder tab to begin specifying options for the database.

3. Specify the maximum number of simultaneous connections the MetaData Service can make to the database in Microsoft SQL Server in the corresponding field.

4. In the database scan period field, enter the appropriate frequency with which the service scans the database to see whether the File System Service has recognized new digital resource addition and modification events*.*

Warning: The default Database Scan Period setting is the recommended setting and should not be modified without explicit direction from MetaCommunications support. Modification of this setting may result in severely impacted performance.

5. In the database scheme reload period field, enter the appropriate frequency (in seconds) after which the service should reload the database scheme.

Warning: The default Database Scheme Reload Period setting is the recommended setting and should not be modified without explicit direction from MetaCommunications support. Modification of this setting may result in severely impacted performance.

6. Specify the appropriate file processing options. File processing options include:

The interval between attempts to process locked files. If a file is locked (it is being used by another application), the MetaData Service will wait the specified number of seconds before attempting to process the file again.

The maximum number of attempts that the MetaData Service should make to process a file once it becomes unlocked.

The interval between attempts to process an unlocked file when the MetaData Service has failed to process the unlocked file successfully on its first attempt.

7. Click the Enable Digital Resources Classification checkbox to enable/disable files from being classified to a role and associated with file collectors using the user defined definitions for each. When disabled, files will not be classified and the corresponding digital resources will not be associated with any file collectors.

8. Click OK. This will save the modifications you have made to the Database Properties and close the Database Properties window.
