Setting Service Properties for the File System Service

Setting Service Properties for the File System Service

The first step in the configuration of the File System Service is setting general, recovery, and security service properties using the File System Service Properties dialog window.

The File System Service uses default service properties unless custom service properties are specified using the procedures described below. For most users, the default service properties will be adequate and need not be changed unless there is a specific technical or performance reason to do so.

Setting File System Service parameters

1. Open the Management Console by selecting Program Files:MetaCommunications:Management Console in the Start menu.

Note: If a destination folder other than the default folder was specified during installation, double click the Management Console.msc icon in the location in which it was installed.

2. Click “MetaCommunications Services”, right-click the File System Service icon and select Properties. This will open the File System Service Properties window.

3. In the “General” tab, specify the general parameters you would like the service to use. General File System Service parameters fall into the following categories:

Processor control - This category of parameters includes the service priority and the list of CPU’s that the service is allowed to use.

NTFS change journal - This category of parameters governs how often the NTFS volume change journals are scanned.

4. In the “Recovery” tab, specify the recovery parameters you would like the service to use. File System Service recovery parameters fall into the following categories:

Access failure - This category of parameters includes the interval between attempts to reconnect to unavailable databases and file servers, and the maximum number of and interval between attempts to access files.

Service failure - This category of parameters allows you to specify whether a dump file should be written in case of service failure, the information to be included in the dump file, and whether the previous dump file can be overwritten.

5. In the “Security” tab, specify the user name and password of the default file access account for the service. This account will be used to access folders for which the ‘Use default account’ access option is selected.

Note: If the user name and password fields are left blank, the local system account will be used. The local system account, however, has an extremely low priority when operating over a network. If the folders which the File System Service will be synchronizing are located on the machine on which the service is installed, this will not affect the performance of the File System Service. If the folders are located on remote computers, specifying a default file access account with greater network privileges is recommended.

6. Click OK. This will save the parameters you have chosen and close the File System Service Properties window.
