Archiving files and folders is a necessary component for most data lifecycle management strategies. Digital Storage ManagerVirtual Ticket Developer provides the flexibility to simplify the implementation of most archiving strategies.
Before archiving any files/folders, it is necessary to know two things:
To what location do you want to archive the files/folders?
To what type of media do you want to eventually migrate archived files/folders?
The answers to these two questions will determine what you will do in the Archive Options window. A common strategy for data lifecycle management is to move archived files/folders to an online archive server, and after some time, move the archived files/folders to offline media.
The benefit of doing this is that when it is time to reclaim space on the archive server, all the files are already grouped into disk images that do not exceed the size of your offline storage media (tape, CD, DVD, etc...).
Typically, the online archive is monitored by an archivist, and when it reaches some predetermined limit (e.g. 80 percent of capacity is used), the archivist burns the oldest archived files/folders to CD, moves the corresponding digital resources to the Media Shelf, and deletes the files/folders from the archive server.
If using an archiving Helper Application, additional automation may be provided. See Archiving Using Helper Applications for more information.
